Day 9 /10 - Murghab - (3600 metres) - 80kms

We said goodbye to our Yurt accommodation and took a fairly pleasant 30km ride to the Niezatash Pass at 4,300 metres where we had morning tea on the main road not worried about the danger of being hit by passing cars as we'd seen so few over the past few days !

The descent after the pass was sublime ! 30kms of stunning free pedalling as we wound our way past  incredibly stark scenery while trying to be mindful of the speed and the imminent threat that some of the "black hole" sized potholes provided !

After passing a military checkpoint it was all stations direct to our Hotel in Murghab ! At 3,600 meters Murghab is the highest town in Tajikistan and a former Russian military outpost !

After 3 days of washing in a river it was beautiful just to have access to running water ! Soup and Potatoes dominated dinner while the 50 metre distance to the local village shop allowed those with a thirst to replenish their diminishing beer supplies !

Rest Day

While some of the gang took to wandering the streets of this "Container" style town it was R&R for others (self included) after 5 pretty damned tough days of riding .

My room mate Kiwi Pet was still suffering from the altitude and joined a growing list of others including Ian that were coming down with associated illnesses - it was not looking good

The evening meal was accompanied by a beer and when the power allowed even a live Man Utd soccer match !

Lunch Time !

Ian, Jacoline & Martein approaching a military checkpoint !

Jurgen taking 5 !

John is down for the count !

The Murghab local market - containers !

Simon at out Murghab accommodation !
